Question: In A Very Good and Useful Hurt, Mike and those he tattoos can communicate using the dead by mixing ashes of those that have passed in ink and tattooing with it. You been employed like a professional body piercer for 16 years in various tattoo shops, so simply how much with this book is inspired from real life? Is it possible to tell us where thinking about communicating with the dead using this method came from?
Aric Davis: I have seen ashes tattooed in skin, We've pierced individuals with jewelry worn with a fallen partner, and We've seen countless memorial tattoos. Without sharing too much--this one isn't my story--we once were built with a seemingly endless stream of customers visiting us to be tattooed with an image of your kitchen appliance. A child that they can all knew had passed, and apparently he'd spoken at length about being tattooed with this very appliance. Those tattoos likely seem very silly to people who don't know their meaning. All that said, the thought came specifically from two customers who had lost a son inside war. Neither of these had ever considered being tattooed, and they arrived for all those in the right reasons, namely, to start recovering. They not only were clients, they became friends, and what was an inescapable tragedy for family was a blessing to any or all of us, as the tattoos did actually work. No ghost stories there, something even better. They chose to live.
Q: A Fantastic and Useful Hurt starts like a love story set in a tattoo shop, then evolves in to a supernatural manhunt detailed with ghosts as well as a serial killer. Was it always your intention to have the beginning with the book be this type of stark juxtaposition to the end?
AD: Believe it or not, it was. The first hints to this are revealed inside first line with the book, and to become quite honest, all from the quirky develop with the customers is meant to ready your readers for some really available stuff. The story as being a concept was written as sort of the tattoo ghost story to pass through around the tattoo shop on an extremely slow Halloween in 2008. It was called "Ink." The guys at the office loved it, but if you ask me it had been too fast-paced. The idea was stuck within my head as being a rotten tooth--it wouldn't stop screaming at me. Writing from a short was something I'd never done, I can't outline and rarely know exactly where I'm using something, in like manner have a finish emerge place was a new thing, and sort of nice.
Q: You made a determination to dedicate the ebook for the young women who were murdered near your property in Grand Rapids last year. What message do you have for people who are actually the victims of terrible crimes?
AD: The message stated in the book with the character Doc, and later mentioned within the afterword, is always that we like a society place far too much emphasis on those that commit horrible acts, in lieu of those who have been destroyed by them. I'd personally much prefer children be trained the names of ten people killed inside the 9/11 attacks, than only educate yourself on the name with the man who's assumed to get planned them.
Q: Your catalogue incorporates a play, a YA mystery novel, regular appearances on "The Five Hundred" (a short story site); you’ve been published on the wsj.com; now you've written a horror novel. With this kind of diverse collection, how do you describe your style? Who could you recommend read a Good and Useful Hurt?
AD: I think I write the thing that makes sense--to me--at the time which i write it. For whatever reason which includes worked out to be this unintentionally eclectic kind of writing. I just love the hell away from it. I cannot pick where my muse takes me, regrettably, but I really do love the ride. I believe a reader for A Great and Useful Hurt should be ready for any fairly rough voyage, and will also keep in your mind that as dark as things get, there is always some light left.
